Spring has arrived in the Mountains!

Spring is highly anticipated for so many reasons.

Here are a few of the many "spring things" we look forward to.......

THRU HIKERS ON THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL..

One of the most evident signs of spring is the appearance of the Appalachian Trail thru hikers.  In 2014, between March 1st and April 15th,, approximately 2,500 hikers set off on the northbound route,  from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Katahdin, Maine.  Many will begin that trek again this year.  And yes, as the sign says, the total AT distance is 2,108.5 miles.  Visit www.appalachiantrail.org for great educational info on the AT.

With its proximity to the Appalachian Trail, Franklin has been designated an official AT community and plays host to large numbers of thru hikers looking for a little rehab before getting back on the trail.  Franklin takes its host status seriously and offers a full menu of hiker events with FRANKLIN TRAIL DAYS, which runs March 20th through April 25th.  They are open to everyone - Come and mingle with the hikers.  Here's a sampling of hiker offerings:

THE MACON COUNTY SENIOR GAMES (AND THE SENIOR GAMES FLEA MARKET) ARE BACK IN TOWN...

It's the 25th anniversary of the Macon County Senior Games, this year held from April 27th through May 16th.  The Senior Games Spring Flea Market benefits the Games and is one of the most eagerly awaited spring events.  With a huge number of vendors, you will see folks lined up at the door waiting to get in.  The flea market takes place this year on April 18th and is held at the Community Center across from the Whistle Stop Mall.  Rent your own tables - or make a donation.  Call Charlie or Millie Honeycutt:  828-524-2227.  They will pick up any and all items, including furniture.  Visit the Senior Games Website for information on all of the Senior Games activities.
